Viagra is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, or the inability to get or maintain an erection. It belongs to a group of drugs known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. Sildenafil works by blocking the enzyme phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5), allowing the muscles of the penis to relax and blood to flow into the spongy tissue of the penis, creating an erection. Viagra is taken orally, and is available in 25, 50, or 100 mg tablets. The recommended starting dose is 50 mg, but the doctor may adjust it depending on the individual’s response and any side effects experienced. Sildenafil should be taken approximately an hour before sexual activity and its effects typically last for four to five hours. Common side effects associated with Viagra include headaches, flushing, upset stomach, and blurred vision. Viagra should not be taken with certain medications, such as nitrates and alpha-blockers. Additionally, it should not be taken by people who have certain medical conditions, such as heart disease, kidney disease, or a history of stroke.
